The University was established under legal authority granted by a provision in the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences Act of 2019 which governs the operations of the University.
To be an inclusive, engaged, entrepreneurial, innovative and research-intensive University.
To advance knowledge, professional competencies and innovation through outstanding teaching, research, consultancy, outreach and engagement with industry and stakeholders in useful ways. The University is committed to providing a vibrant and supportive intellectual environment that produces influential, entrepreneurial and innovative graduates, driving the pace of transformation locally and globally.
The University has adopted a set of values that are shared among all staff and students and thereby offer them some guidance as they fulfil their respective responsibilities. These values are expected to drive Mubas’s culture and priorities. The core values are:
• Excellence
• Integrity
• Discovery and Innovation
• Entrepreneurship
• Responsiveness
• Inclusivity and Diversity
The University Students are taught by qualified academic members, most of whom have initially been trained locally up to the undergraduate level, and then pursued graduate training at institutions in other countries in Africa, Europe, North America, and even Asia and Australia. There are over 256 academic staff members at the University. Of these, 42 have doctorate degrees, 150 have master’s degrees, and 64 have bachelor’s degrees. It takes quite a bit of academic productivity to become a Professor within the Univesriy system. Perhaps not surprisingly, there are only 2 Professors at the University, and there are 5 Associate Professors. There are 38 senior lecturers, 104 lecturers and 48 assistant lecturers.
The University caters to students of both genders who come from all three regions of the country—Northern, Central, and Southern. International students are also welcome to enrol. There are currently 4777 students enrolled at the MUBAS, of which 3166 are male and 1611 are female.
The programme has three entry points referred to as pathways and three exits. This is in line with the University’s multiple entry and exit requirement.
Pathway 1: A candidate with Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) with six credits including English and at least a pass in Mathematics, ‘O’ Level or equivalent may join the programme at the beginning of year 1.
Pathway 2: A candidate with a minimum of 4 credits at MSCE, ‘O’ Level or equivalent
